Lloyd's Community Programme

Established in 1989, Lloyd’s Community Programme is one of the longest-running business volunteering initiatives in the City.

Lloyd’s Community Programme helps individuals achieve their full potential through support from the Lloyd’s market. We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities for the Lloyd’s market which support local communities and equip young people with employability skills. This feeds into the Lloyd’s talent priority, aiming to attract and retain a diverse workforce that will bring innovation to the insurance sector.

We see volunteering as a valuable way for people to use their personal and professional skills, as well as develop new ones. Our Volunteering Skills Matrix is a fantastic tool that helps individuals in the Lloyd's market identify skills development opportunities through our volunteering programmes. To formalise the benefits of volunteering, we have created a volunteering skills matrix which outlines the transferable skills that can be gained through each of our opportunities. This will help people identify the right opportunity for professional development as well as find a rewarding and enjoyable volunteer activity.

Our volunteers told us that through taking part:

  • 85% developed their ability to motivate and develop others
  • 83% felt that taking part increased their wellbeing and happiness
  • 80% improved their communication skills

Our Programmes

Primary School programmes delivered through our partnership with Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership.

Reading and Numbers Partners

Volunteer for a one to one relationship with a student to develop their literacy or numeracy skills, build confidence, increase motivation and act as a role model. Students are selected who would benefit most from the programme. A DBS check and training is required.

  • Location: Local school in Tower Hamlets
  • Commitment: Ongoing – 1 lunchbreak per week/fortnight in term time
  • Volunteer skills developed: Coaching, communication, flexibility
  • Opportunity type: Education

Abacus

Abacus is a financial literacy programme for 9 - 10 years olds and their parents at primary schools in Tower Hamlets. Research shows that money habits are generally formed by the age of seven, and financial behaviours are heavily influenced by family. Workshops include managing money, financial products (insurance) and relevance in workplace. Watch our Abacus video to bring this to life.

  • Location: Local school in Tower Hamlets, or celebration event at Lloyd’s
  • Commitment: 2x 90 minute workshops over an academic year

  • Opportunity type: Financial Literacy

Travel Bursary fund

In addition, Lloyd’s funds travel bursaries for primary schools in Tower Hamlets to enable them to undertake school trips outside of their local community; widening their horizons, increasing confidence and developing social and emotional skills. This includes residential journeys and educational trips.

Secondary School programmes are delivered through our partnership with Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership.

Mentoring

Volunteers are needed to mentor a 15-17 year old student on a one to one basis at one of our partner secondary schools and sixth forms. You will help them learn about the world of work as well as develop your coaching and leadership skills. A DBS check and training is required.   • Location: Local school in Tower Hamlets or your office
  • Commitment: Ongoing – 1 hour per month from November - June
  • Volunteer skills developed: Coaching, communication, leadership

Aim2Attain

The Aim2Attain programme is a series of employability workshops attended by secondary school students with the support of business volunteers. The sessions aim to raise aspirations and help students realise their potential and encourage higher education and apprenticeship routes.

Head2Head

This is a facilitated practice interview programme which gives secondary school students a real interview experience based on their CV in order to help them apply for employment or higher education.

  • Location: Local school in Tower Hamlets
  • Commitment: One off – ½ day or 1 full day
  • Volunteer skills developed: Communication, flexibility and adaptability problem solving
  • Opportunity type: Employability

Support to young people post 18 is delivered through our partnership with SEO London.

SEO Summer Mentoring

The aim of this programme is to develop the professional skills of undergraduates who are undertaking work placements in the Lloyd’s market over the summer, or who have been unsuccessful in their applications for placements in the Lloyd’s market. This is achieved by working one to one with a young person, through a series of structured mentoring meetings. 

Location: Virtual- emails, video meetings and phone calls
Commitment: 5x mentoring sessions June - September

Step into Insurance

Volunteer for a range of workshops from July - September to introduce undergraduates to the world of insurance. Content includes employability sessions, speed networking, career talks, mock interviews and top tips.

Location: Virtual 
Commitment: One off sessions
Volunteer skills developed: Presentation, time management, flexibility and adaptability, coaching
Opportunity type: Employability

Summer Placements

Host an undergraduate student from Universities across the UK for a paid work placement over the summer to introduce them to the world of work, the Lloyd’s market and attract new and diverse talent for your early careers programmes. The paid placements across the Lloyd’s market typically last for six to twelve weeks over the summer and the young people go through a rigorous selection process and receive dedicated support to ensure they get the most out of the scheme and gain employment experience. Market companies register their interest from January each year. 

Team Challenges

Organise an event with your colleagues (groups from 10 – 100) to provide practical, hands-on support to community groups; such as improving community centres and public spaces, social events (such as tea parties with the elderly), maintaining parks and outdoor spaces, or working with young people to build an adventure playground. Team challenges are coordinated by our partner, East London Business Alliance, who help organise the event and there may be a cost involved for your business to cover tools and materials.
