What has your experience been like so far?
Everyone here at Lloyd’s has been really welcoming. In the beginning, I thought that the experience might be a bit intimidating - when I think of Lloyd’s, I think of this big entity that everyone has heard of. But when I came in it was a good surprise that everyone’s so willing to help you if you ever have a problem. If I’m really stuck on something on Excel, even if it’s a really simple thing, they’re always there to help me out and they don’t mind. I’m really enjoying my time here so far.
What opportunities are there for interns at Lloyd’s?
There are a lot of opportunities for an intern. Because you get a “buddy” on the graduate scheme, it means you always have someone to fall back on if you have a question. The internship gives you access to online training, meaning you can develop other skills alongside the work you complete for your team. You’re also able to explore other areas and venture into different departments - it gives interns the opportunity to learn about all areas of the business and meet a wide range of interesting people.
How do you think your unique perspective adds value to Lloyd’s?
I think that it’s really important to have a diverse set of people and I don’t think age, background or experience should stop you from being able to contribute your perspective on things. It’s nice to give opportunities to younger people and help them mature into the role as they get more experience. Having lived in Malaysia all my life, it’s shaped a different perspective and there’s something new I can bring to meetings. Coming from an international background has helped mould me into a person who’s able to reach out to more people - communication is such an important thing here.
What could your future look like at Lloyd’s?
Given the opportunity, I would like to experience Lloyd’s as a graduate - it seems like such a great opportunity to me. As an intern, I have eight weeks to learn as much as possible so I’d love to learn more and get more exposure over a longer period. I know that Lloyd’s has an office in Singapore - if luck is on my side then I’ll come back. Be it in the UK, or be it in Asia, I would like to be a part of Lloyd’s - it’s a special entity and they welcome people from all over the world.
