Introducing Catriona Geraghty

Having started her career in consultancy, Catriona joined Lloyd’s in September 2018. She’s now a Senior Actuary, managing the Central Reserving team within market reserving and capital at Lloyd’s.

It’s always worth voicing your opinion. Even if you are the most junior person in the room or the newest person in the room, no question is a stupid question - no opinion is a stupid opinion.

What was it like stepping into a more senior role at Lloyd’s?

Recently, I have been asked to step up and take on the role of manager of the Central Reserving team. This has broadened the number of workstreams that I’m involved with and has allowed me to move into a role as a decision-maker, helping to shape the strategy and the direction of the team. I feel privileged that Lloyd’s has provided me with this opportunity, especially when I’ve been here for less than a year. Since joining Lloyd’s, I have also had the opportunity to get involved in so many different things aside from just the technical work, such as Lloyd’s Wellbeing and graduate training - there’s an opportunity to get involved in whatever you want to do here at Lloyd’s.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your time at Lloyd’s?

It’s always worth voicing your opinion. Even if you are the most junior person in the room or the newest person in the room, no question is a stupid question, no opinion is a stupid opinion. I think all input is valuable and can really contribute to the direction that a team or corporation is taking. I think Lloyd’s values the voices of all of its employees and that is something that I have really learnt - not to be afraid and to always give your opinion and your input.

What motivates and inspires you in your work?

Managing to achieve something always feels good. I’m always looking for better and more efficient ways of doing things - whether using a process that’s already in existence or designing a new process from scratch. If there's an existing process, I always try to bring a fresh perspective and find ways to make things more streamlined. If there’s a new process, I challenge myself and the team to think about how we can be truly innovative.

How has your career shaped the perspective you bring to Lloyd's?

I started my career as an actuary fresh out of University College Dublin and joined a consultancy firm in London. I was there for about four and a half years before taking six months off to go travelling. Taking some time out gave me a really good perspective on life - I now think a bit differently. That’s something I’ve taken with me both in my working life and my personal life: the easiest or the most obvious path is not necessarily always the best path. I try to find a path that will help me to achieve the best results.
