Landslide risk and climate change in the European Alps

This paper outlines the scope and objectives of the research being conducted by Joanne Wood at the University of Exeter into the influence of climate change on the risk of landslides in the Alps.

Landslide risk and climate change in the European Alps

December 2011

The risk of landslides in the European Alps is considerable and has important implications for the insurance industry given the high levels of tourism and leisure based development in the region. Understanding how this risk may change in the future and in particular the influence of a changing climate on the magnitude and frequency of damaging landslides will be of value to insurers. This is why Lloyd’s chose to fund this research into landslide probability and climate change in the European Alps.
