Help a young person achieve their potential this summer
Helping young people gain experience of the varied and exciting careers within the Lloyd’s market.
We’re looking for teams and departments in the market to host a state educated, bright, ambitious 18-year-olds from London boroughs for a four to thirteen-week paid internship between July and September 2020.
We want to connect keen, bright, young Londoners to entry level career opportunities and give development opportunities to students, like Lawrence. Lawrence undertook his placement last year at Beazley and is still there one year on!
After registering with The Brokerage, a City of London based social mobility charity connecting young Londoners and employers, Lawrence applied for an Executive Risk summer intern role at Beazley as the maths and computing based nature of the role fitted perfectly with the subjects he was studying at the time. Following an interview process, he was offered the position and during his 10-week internship he was given the opportunity to shadow underwriters and work with other departments such as IT, claims and investment. Beazley were so impressed they asked him to stay on for a year’s internship.
Talking about his experience, Lawrence said:
I had planned to take a gap year before university to gain experience in software development and understand if that role was truly for me. Having spent time with the IT Department during my internship, I was offered to continue at Beazley as an IT intern for the year on a 3-month rotation within the IT Department. Currently, I am working in the Data Science team and gaining valuable experience. I have also had the chance to represent Beazley in Datathons (data-oriented Hackathons) and collaborate with many departments across Beazley. This has really consolidated my decision to study Computer Science at university and opened the idea of working within the insurance industry in the future. Every day is different, and I can visually see how I contribute to my company.
About the summer placement programme
Building a pipeline of future talent within the Lloyd’s market is a priority for the industry and the work of our market wide initiative, Lloyd’s Community Programme, aims to do this through helping young people achieve their potential.
We aim to support young people from our communities to build their employability skills, knowledge of the insurance sector and take their first step into their careers. Delivered in partnership with The Brokerage, this flagship initiative has been running for ten years to give the Lloyd’s market access to diverse and talented young people, with 65 paid placements in 17 companies across the sector last year.
The programme feeds into the market’s talent priority, helping to attract and retain a diverse workforce that brings innovation and fresh ideas to the market. We know that 25% of students return to their host company after their work placement and 60% students work in financial services five years on.
