Students attending the SEO Step into Insurance event

Welcoming Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) London

Last week we welcomed over 85 students to the SEO Step into Insurance event at Lloyd's, designed to give students an insight into the insurance sector and the diverse careers available within it

We began working with SEO London back in January 2021.

The charity has a 20-year history in the diversity and inclusion space, preparing talented young people from diverse backgrounds for career success. Their mission is to drive a cultural shift and create an inclusive workplace where everyone can achieve their potential.

Through our partnership we seek to:

  • Raise awareness of the insurance sector as a career option for young people
  • Develop the skills of young people to succeed in a career in the Lloyd’s market
  • Attract and support young people through the recruitment process for emerging talent opportunities at Lloyd’s and in the market
  • Provide high quality corporate volunteering and work placement opportunities to meet the needs of the Lloyd’s market

The Step into Insurance even featured an introduction from Nathalie Richards, CEO of SEO London, who gave us a heart-warming and inspirational talk about the purpose of SEO in helping support diverse and talented young individuals as well as her own background growing up and navigating her career journey. We also got to hear from Mark Lomas, Head of Culture at Lloyd's who provided an insight into how the Lloyd’s market works as well as why culture is so important here at Lloyd’s and what we are doing to embed it into our organisation.

Later on, we got to hear from five speakers from the market, giving insight into various careers in the industry from Actuarial, Broking, Claims and Underwriting. We also got to witness a fantastic roleplay on how the underwriting floor works, brilliantly performed by guests.

Thank you to our speakers Jennilee and Michael from Hiscox, Neelkiran and Ilona from MS Amlin, and Raza from Ed Broking. Also, to those that took part in the role-play; Alex and David from Chubb and Martin-Smith from Aon.

In the afternoon, there was an interactive quiz, where we saw students competing in teams, testing themselves on just how much they had learned throughout the day about insurance.  At the end of the day, students were also given the opportunity to network with senior and early careers professionals in the market through speed networking.

“It has been a very informative session, I have gained more details and insight into the different departments in insurance. This made me more interested in pursuing a role in insurance.”
Britney - SEO London Student
“We’ve learnt the difference from brokering, underwriting and actuarial. I didn’t know what any of that meant, definitely not an industry spoken about a lot. I have a lot to take away from this today.”
Nasra - SEO London Student
“Definitely interesting to know more about insurance and the different avenues to get into it. I knew nothing about insurance before and wasn’t interested in a career. Today, I will definitely go back and think about it for my next career step.”
