There are approximately 13 million peri or menopausal women in the UK, and women of menopausal age are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce.
Perimenopause is when hormone levels begin to fluctuate and symptoms may appear, often in the early to mid-forties, and there are more than 30 recognised symptoms. Menopause is 12 consecutive months without a period, and the average age is 51 in the UK.
Symptoms last on average 4-8 years, with 80% of women experiencing them, and 77% of women finding one symptom very difficult. The experience is different for everyone. It can happen naturally or as a side effect of treatment, and for some people it can happen much earlier.
World Menopause Day is intended to raise awareness of the menopause and support available for improving health and wellbeing for those experiencing menopausal symptoms.
(peri)Menopause does not need to be something that women suffer through silently.
