National Coming Out Day is a time to celebrate the experiences and listen to the challenges of those who have come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community. It is also an opportunity for allies to show their full support to their LGBTQ+ colleagues
It isn’t a day to force people to come out, or to shame people who haven’t done so. It’s a day to celebrate the beauty of being true to yourself, for having the courage to share an important part of your life with others, and for celebrating those who may come out to you.
At Lloyd's we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive culture and working environment where everyone feels comfortable and can be themselves, and one of the most simple ways we can drive equality and inclusion within Lloyd's and wider society is to share our real-life experiences. By doing this, we can raise awareness of our diversity, allowing people to get to know us better, and changing uninformed behaviours.
Although National Coming Out Day has traditionally been focused on the LGBTQ+ community, it is not the only form of coming out there is. Many people have other aspects of their lives and identities that they may choose not to bring to work with them - for example their faith, having a disability or being a carer for a family member. Therefore for National Coming Out Day 2022, we would like to celebrate all forms of coming out and encourage everyone to bring our true selves to Lloyd's.
If you feel comfortable sharing your own coming out experiences, as LGBTQ+ or otherwise, we would like to invite you to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments field below to get the conversation started.
