How can we better understand the impacts of disasters using NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration technology?

ImageCat and NASA are organizing a workshop at the Lloyd’s Lab, to bring the Global Economic Disruption Index (GEDI) developed using NASA technologies and economic impact models to the insurance sector. Business interruption losses can be disproportionately large compared to the direct damage loss after catastrophe (CAT) events. The risk of cascading economic failure is difficult to predict, but NASA and ImageCat are working on a solution. GEDI is a framework which utilizes Earth Observation (EO), catastrophe (CAT) risk models, and economic modeling to predict cascading economic impacts.

Shanna McClain, Program manager for the NASA Disasters Program, and Rowan Douglas, CEO Climate Risk and Resilience at the Howden Group, will discuss the huge potential for blending EO data with modeling and financial theory and practice. This workshop aimed at understanding the needs of the insurance sector will also feature Charles Huyck (ImageCat), Principal Investigator for the GEDI project, Shubharoop Ghosh (ImageCat), industry partnerships lead, and Tim McCosh (Yokahu), industry end user.
