International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Sara Gomez

We want to recognise visible and invisible disabilities and promote the importance of inclusion in life and the workplace throughout the year

Saturday 3rd December marks the 30th Anniversary of the first International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). The IDPWD was first announced by the UN in 1992 with the aim of advancing disability rights and protecting the wellbeing of people with disabilities.

We want to recognise visible and invisible disabilities and promote the importance of inclusion in life and the workplace throughout the year. An integrated approach is required to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind.

“As the proud Exec Sponsor of the Disability Community at Lloyd’s, I am committed to ensuring that everyone at Lloyd’s can thrive and has the support that they need to perform at their best. Access and accessibility are one of the main pillars of our D&I work and we are working towards our Disability Confident Leader accreditation.”

How Lloyd’s supports its employees

I am pleased to share with you a series of resources that Lloyd’s offers to support employees with disabilities:

  • All UK employees are eligible for regular health assessments.
  • We encourage you to check out our newly launched e-learning playlist on disability which covers topics such as diabetes, ADHD and Dyslexia and many more.
  • You can download and access the Headspace app, a globally available tool to help you start practicing mindfulness and meditation. Headspace sessions include topics such as coping with cancer, pain management and managing anxiety.
  • Flexible working, including “work for your day” is available – employees can agree with their manager if they need to occasionally flex, or if there is a longer-term change to their working arrangements required.
  • If you have a disability, we encourage you to ask for any workplace adjustments for disabilities and health conditions via the Clear Talent online system in our UK offices. This include, for instance, any assistive technology that you might need. Clear Talents helps Lloyd’s to understand how any circumstance or condition can impact an employee’s ability to perform at their best and provides expert recommendations to resolve the situation.
  • Join the Lloyd’s Disability community or IDAWN, the disability focused market network sponsored by Lloyd’s.
