Reflecting on Black History Month

Peter Spires

Peter reflects on the past month of Black History celebrations

Recognising how the Corporation and the market have got involved in acknowledging the importance of reflecting on our past and looking to our future, in order to continue to support and champion our black community in this industry.

Peter Spires, Lloyd's General Counsel, is the Exec sponsor for the Multicultural Awareness Community at Lloyd's.

Throughout this month we have focused on showcasing and celebrating black talent and businesses, supporting the careers of ethnic minorities and updating our research on the transatlantic slave trade. We also collaborated with our partners Race Action Through Leadership (RATL) and the African-Caribbean Insurance Network (ACIN), and the market.

Let's reflect on our Black History Month activities

Race Action Through Leadership Career Conversation Panel

On 4 Oct, our Multicultural Awareness Community organised the Race Action Through Leadership Career Conversation Panel attended by 60+ delegates. This was an opportunity to hear from the executive advisory group of RATL, about how they have developed their careers, what barriers they have experienced and how they overcame them.

Business of Slavery event

On 12 Oct, Lloyd's Chairman, Bruce Carnegie-Brown, hosted the Business of Slavery event. Bruce was joined by Dr Alexandre White and his research assistant, Pyar Seth from Black Beyond Data, to update us on their research based on items from our collection related to the slave-trade. We are pleased to say that we had about 400 delegates from both the Corporation and the market.

The work of Sir Frank Bowling

On 19 Oct, we ran a drop-in session for people to find out more about the work of Sir Frank Bowling.

TMK Black Owned Market

I had the pleasure of opening the Black Owned Market on 27 Oct, showcasing Black owned businesses who were selling their products, and it was a great opportunity to network too. There was food, drinks and a DJ! More than 90 people from across the Corporation and market joined us for this event.

ACIN Quiz night

At a sold-out event, our Lloyd's colleagues had great fun attending the ACIN quiz night.

Lloyd's Together Multicultural Awareness Community

Community involvement

We are proud to announce that the Lloyd’s Together Multicultural Awareness Community won an award for their support of Reach Society Employability programmes, which support young black youth to aspire to careers in professions.

Our participation at several careers events and providing insurance professionals to run workshops on careers in insurance lead to winning the award.
