Conversation about the Clagett & Pratt risk books (1823 & 1824)

The conversation

This conversation takes as its starting point two risk books of the underwriting firm, Clagett and Pratt. Lloyd’s purchased both books in 1932. These two risks books detail the trade voyages the firm underwrote, many of which departed from the United States.

This conversation with a colleague whose enslaved ancestors would have produced cotton or tobacco which was later shipped from the port of New Orleans discusses personal experiences, racial inequality, and the legacy of slavery.
