This conversation takes its starting point from two underwriting risk books of the firm Clagett and Pratt, of 1823 and 1824. These documents were purchased by Lloyd’s for its Collection in 1932.
These two risks books detail the trade voyages the firm underwrote many of which originate from America. This conversation, with a colleague with ancestors from Mississippi who were enslaved and would have produced cotton or tobacco shipped from the port of New Orleans, discusses personal experiences, racial inequality and the legacy of slavery.
