Although the wide spread damage caused by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast is well known, there are less well known areas that are extremely vulnerable to hurricanes. Lake Okeechobee is one of these areas, with the potential damage from a hurricane worsened by the vulnerability of the Herbert Hoover Dike. Written by Lloyd’s Emerging Risks team, this report focuses on the causes of the potential failure of this dam along with an analysis of the consequences if such a failure occurred.
