Lloyd’s appoints Lord Sedwill to Council as Senior Independent Deputy Chair

Lloyd’s today announced the appointment of Mark Sedwill, Baron Sedwill of Sherborne KCMG FRGS, to Lloyd’s Council and his election to the role of Senior Independent Director and Deputy Chair of Lloyd’s, succeeding Andy Haste.

Bruce Carnegie-Brown, Chairman of Lloyd’s, said: “I’m delighted that Mark has agreed to join the Lloyd’s Council as Deputy Chair and Senior Independent Director. As one of the most respected figures in modern British diplomacy, and a former Head of the UK Civil Service, Mark brings to Lloyd’s a unique and independent perspective as we deliver against our strategic priorities. His leadership on initiatives in the areas of governance, risk management, ESG and business transformation make him an excellent choice for this role.”

Commenting on his appointment to the Lloyd’s Council, Lord Sedwill said: “Lloyd’s is a world-class British institution which is vital to the future of the City and UK financial services. I am honoured to have been invited to contribute to that future and look forward to joining the team.”

Lord Sedwill’s appointment has been approved by the Prime Minister on advice from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) and remains subject to the approval of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Lord Sedwill succeeds Andy Haste who completes nine years as Lloyd’s Deputy Chair and Senior Independent Director on 31st October. Bruce Carnegie-Brown said: ‘Andy has made a huge contribution to Lloyd’s during a time of significant challenge and change for the market. We have benefitted enormously from his wisdom and experience and we are very grateful to him.’

1. Lord Sedwill was formerly Cabinet Secretary, National Security Advisor and Head of the UK Civil Service. He has a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience having led or helped shape policy-making approaches to topics such as ESG, energy transition, cyber security and digital transformation. Alongside chairing the G7 Panel on Economic Resilience, Lord Sedwill chairs the Pacific Future Forum. He is also a senior advisor to Rothschild & Co, and a member of the RNLI Council and of The HALO Trust board. 
2. Andy Haste has been the Senior Independent Deputy Chairman of Lloyd’s since 2012, completing his third term on 31 October 2021. He is currently the Chairman of esure Group.
3. An advisory letter in relation to this appointment will be published by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments in due course.
