Lloyd's helps green Tower Hamlets to mark thirty years of volunteering in London

Wed 05 Jun 2019

Lloyd’s is celebrating thirty years of market wide volunteering in London through the Lloyd’s Community Programme.

To mark the occasion as well as Volunteering Week and World Environment Day, 100 volunteers from six companies in the Lloyd’s market will spend the day improving the green space at Mile End Park in Tower Hamlets.

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, will roll up his sleeves alongside the team of volunteers as they transform this well-loved public space for local people to enjoy.

Over the last three decades, companies across the Lloyd’s market have provided volunteers and support to young people and communities in London. Last year alone more than 2,500 volunteers took part in Lloyd’s Community Programme and donated over 20,000 hours.

I’m delighted to see that so many of our people want to reach out to the local communities in which we are represented and in which we work. It is fantastic to be able to support the work being done to green the urban environment, particularly as air pollution is such a prevalent problem in the City of London and surrounding boroughs.
John Neal, Lloyd’s CEO

Lloyd’s is working in partnership with East London Business Alliance (ELBA), who also celebrate their 30th anniversary this year, to provide opportunities for community groups to help increase social mobility, broaden horizons and create a pipeline of new talent for the insurance sector.

For Lloyd’s market volunteers and their employers, the benefits of taking part are wide ranging; from developing professional and personal skills in the workplace, complementing formal training, to building relationships and networks across the market. In 2018, 83% of volunteers felt volunteering increased their sense of wellbeing and happiness, and 85% felt volunteering increased their ability to motivate and develop others.

Lloyd’s Community Programme’s long-standing partnership with ELBA has provided community groups across London with thousands of volunteers every year. These organisations, like Mile End Park, rely on business volunteers to survive. This enables community groups to redirect funds, free up resource and give them the opportunity to achieve large scale projects. Thanks to all our volunteers in the market for getting involved at our event at Mile End Park; a fitting way to celebrate our 30th anniversaries.

About Lloyd’s Community Programme

Over the last 30 years, companies across the Lloyd’s insurance market have been providing volunteers and support to young people and communities in London as part of Lloyd’s Community Programme.

Working with young people from primary school through to post 18, our initiatives focus on developing confidence, employability and professional skills to inspire young Londoners to set themselves up for success. Building their knowledge and understanding of the insurance sector helps feed into the market’s talent priority to attract and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce that brings innovation to the market. Lloyd’s Community Programme also provides local organisations with invaluable volunteer support where it is needed.

ELBA

ELBA or the East London Business Alliance are a long standing charity in east London, connecting the local community and the business world to facilitate greater social mobility. ELBA are immensely proud of the contributions that our volunteers have made over the last 30 years towards the upkeep of open spaces in east London. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary as a charity this year, it is wonderful to reflect upon the great effort that thousands of volunteers have put in over the years to ensure that east London as well as being a place of hope is also a place that is physically being well looked after.
