About the event

The Lloyd's Multicultural Awareness Community (MAC) are hosting their first ever Ramadan event, and you're invited! We can't wait to talk to you about this important time of reflection.

Everyone of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome as we hope to give colleagues the opportunity to understand more about Ramadan, and what it means to our community, but also how to support individuals during this time of reflection.

What will the event cover?

  • An introduction to the five pillars of Islam
  • Ramadan and fasting
  • Panel discussions
  • Fasting in the corporate world
  • How to balance fasting and working
  • How you can support your Muslim colleagues
  • Individual and shared experiences
  • Misconceptions about Islam and fasting
  • Q&A
  • And of course, buffet and soft drinks!
  • Quiz

"This year Ramadan is due start on the 22 or 23 of March (dependent on the lunar calendar) which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting or Sawm is the fourth pillar of Islam, which focuses on abstaining from food and drink, from sunrise until sunset. At the end of every Ramadan, I truly believe I leave the month as a better person. I feel closer to my religion and Allah (God), becoming more grateful and patient.

Being able to discuss the importance of Ramadan and why we fast, with the Corporation and market is a huge opportunity for me as a Muslim. It means my non-Muslim colleagues, as well as my Muslim colleagues, can understand why Ramadan is so important to me as an individual. This event is open to everybody, from all faiths, religions, ethnicities and cultures!

There are no silly questions! For example, one question I always get asked is if I can still drink water, the answer is no, as we abstain from all food and drink. Having only joined Lloyd’s in September 2022 and never worked in a corporate environment before, I'm so glad to be involved in organising the first ever Ramadan event at Lloyd's!

Come along!"

FAQs

What should I wear to a Ramadan event?

If you're observing Ramadan, feel free to attend the event wearing traditional or Islamic clothing like an abaya or a thobe! Whatever you feel comfortable in.

If you're coming along to find out more about our community, come as you are, everyone is welcome!

Can I ask questions? I don't want to overstep or say the wrong thing

There are no wrong questions. Lloyd's is a safe space where everyone can be themselves and we encourage attendees to ask away to build their knowledge and understanding.
