The Lloyd's Broker Academy is designed for high-achieving US and Canadian retail brokers with approximately three to five years’ experience of insurance: a selection of the best and brightest brokers in the industry. It focuses primarily on deepening participants’ understanding of their existing areas of specialisation.

The Academy is designed and delivered with the support and commitment of a working group made up of representatives from Beazley, Hiscox, Lloyd's, Miller, MS Amlin and AXA XL as well as participation from managing agents, brokers and technical specialists across the Lloyd's market.

The most recent programme ran 01-05 October 2018, providing participants with the opportunity to see Lloyd’s through the eyes of the market’s underwriters and brokers, gaining a detailed understanding of how business is transacted at Lloyd’s and building new relationships. As with previous years, brokers were split according to class of business: Management Liability; Professional Liability; Energy; Marine & Inland Transportation; and Commercial Property.

Underwriters and brokers from across the Lloyd’s market delivered presentations to the brokers on The Role of the Lloyd’s Broker; London’s Role in Specialist (re)Insurance; Pricing Considerations; Innovation; The Perfect Submission; and The Lifecycle of a Claim. The group also received presentations and workshops on Emerging Risks and Innovation from Lloyd's Innovation Team, a session on Blockchain from Walid al-Saqqaf from Beazley/Insureblocks and a cyber workshop from Sharif Gardner at Axis Capital.

Another new area for 2018 was an afternoon dedicated to The Future of Insurance: Talent & Technology with the support of the LMG (London Market Group) showcasing examples of new and innovative product development: Julia Kirby, Author, on Strategies for Success in the World of Data and AI; Nils Mork-Ulnes, Head of Strategy for Science, AIG, and Marilyn Blattner-Hoyle, Head of Supply Chain and Trade Finance, AIG Europe, on The Role of Blockchain in Trade Credit Insurance; Zosia Karjewska, McKenzie Intelligence Services on How advances in Satellite Imaging and IoT will Revolutionise Property Claims Adjustment; Antton Pena, Founder, Flock on How On-Demand Drone Insurance is Transforming the Drone Industry - and the Insurance Industry; William Pitt, Chief Marketing Officer, Beazley on How Personalized Digital Policies are Transforming the Customer Experience; and Paul Howard, Client & Broker Management AXA XL on New insurance solutions for autonomous vehicles.

The 41 brokers who attended The Lloyd's Broker Academy 2018 also participated in networking events hosted by Marsh, Miller and enjoyed a networking dinner in the unique surroundings of the Adam Room at Lloyd’s with representatives from the Lloyd’s Market and the Working Group, which was hosted by Jon Hancock, Lloyd’s Performance Management Director.

The week culminated in sessions on Cyber, Crisis Management: Kidnap & Ransom, Political Violence, Supply Chain and the opportunity for the brokers to take on a business case and pitch to a fictional business panel in order to win The Andrew Beazley Memorial trophy.

Brokers were also able to spend time at the box with underwriters and shadowing brokers as well to get a greater understanding of how business is placed at Lloyd’s and the crucial importance of face-to-face interaction with complex risks.
