The annual Lloyd’s Market Charity Awards scheme, run by Lloyd’s Charities Trust, is now open for applications.

Colleagues working in the Lloyd’s market are invited to nominate a charity of their choice to receive a donation of £2,000. Donations are given to charities in recognition of an individual’s fundraising and voluntary work. Awards are also made to charities that have given invaluable support to those whose lives have been affected by difficult circumstances.

In 2016 Lizzie Bailey of Miles Smith Insurance Group won an award on behalf of Scope. Scope provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year and work to raise awareness of issues that affect disabled people.

Lizzie worked hard as a fundraiser for the charity, proving her dedication by completing the Marathon Des Sables – a 156 mile course, run over 6 days across the Saharan desert – otherwise known as ‘the toughest footrace on earth’.

Commenting on the award, Lizzie said:
"Training for a marathon and supporting a deeply personal cause is isolating and tough, both physically and mentally. However, knowing I had the support of my peers and the market made a huge impact on me. The reason I entered the Marathon des Sables was to raise money to assist the outreach programs which help make disabled children feel less isolated by providing appropriate targeted materials to them and to teach their differently abled peers about disability. Helping a child feel less alone by making those around them more informed about their individual need requirements is really my personal goal and the ethos and resources that Scope provide allows this to be a reality, however, the support of the award also helped make me feel less isolated in my fundraising and gained the support of my peers, a result I did not expect.”

This year, another thirty award winners will be selected by trustees of Lloyd’s Charities Trust.

The closing date for entries is 25 September 2017 and the award winners will be announced at a reception in December.
