In February 2012, Jan Blumenthal was appointed General Representative for Germany. Mr. Blumenthal has decades of professional experience in the insurance industry (amongst others in the UK and the USA) and before joining Lloyd’s he was a member of the managing board of a major international broker.

The German insurance market (excluding life and health insurance) is the biggest in Europe with a gross premium income of almost 100 bn Euro, and is therefore strategically very important for Lloyd’s.  For further information please see our Market intelligence reports. It is important to emphasise German clients need not only for high insurance capacities but also for specialist solutions for diverse domestic and export risks.

In Germany, Lloyd's has so far been mainly known as a market for marine ship, transport and aircraft risks, but also for the property and casualty classes. Other classes of business heavily required by clients in Germany are contingency risks, political risks, as well as fine arts and sports insurances.

Lloyd’s transacts business in Germany on the basis of the authorisation for cross-border “freedom of services business” or the local authorisation for “establishment business”.

The German office manages regulatory or supervisory issues, acts as legal representative before the German courts and maintains relations with supervisory authorities. Public tenders and administrative and technical assistance for Lloyd’s coverholders and service companies are also part of our service.

We are here to attend to client and broker requirements, to support them in their search for general and special insurance coverage, and to explain the way the Lloyd’s market works and how it can be accessed. We promote the expansion of the relationships between German market participants (brokers, in-house-brokers, clients etc.) and Lloyd’s partners.

We also offer translation services for the Lloyd’s Corporation, for Lloyd’s coverholders and service companies and support the market in developing insurance and reinsurance projects. The promotion and strengthening of the Lloyd’s brand in Germany plays an important part of our day-to-day work.
