Today, through its partnership with the Insurance Intellectual Capital Initiative, UK Research Councils and specifically commissioned academic institutions, Lloyd's Tercentenary Research Foundation continues its work of funding top flight academic research by supporting new programmes of research on risk related issues.
Role of Coastal Habitats in Managing Natural Hazards
Lloyd’s Tercentenary Research Foundation is funding a two-year research project led by the University of California at Santa Cruz entitled ‘The Role of Coastal Habitats in Managing Natural Hazards and Risk Reduction: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach Across Ecology, Economics and Engineering’. UCSC and project partners, The Nature Conservancy and Wildlife Conservancy Society, aim to examine the factors that determine the role of coastal and marine habitats in damage reduction from flooding and surge. In particular, the research seeks to explore how nature-based defence systems can be incorporated into policy and industry and to quantify and emphasize the societal value that these ecosystems provide.
News: The first report from this project, Coastal Wetlands and Flood Damage Reduction, was released in October 2016. The report finds that during Hurricane Sandy alone, coastal wetlands likely prevented more than US$625 million in flood damages to properties and that marshes can reduce annual flood losses by more than 20% on average. The report illustrates the value of wetlands as natural defences using risk industry-based methods and tools.

Fulbright-Lloyd’s of London Awards
The Fulbright-Lloyd’s of London Scholar and Postgraduate Awards enable British academics wishing to conduct research in areas such as emerging and evolving risks, social media and insurance, impact of globalisation on supply chain risk, or any other subject or interest related to risk, to study in the US.
The Scholar Award offers funding to study for up to 12 months in a top higher education institute in the US, whilst the Postgraduate Award provides first-year funding for a UK post-graduate to pursue a Master’s degree in the US.
Both Awards offer the recipient access to the global Fulbright programme with its distinctive enrichment opportunities and scholar benefits package. As a Fulbright Scholar or Postgraduate, Awardees will join the global alumni network.
