  • Can I apply by post?

    Unfortunately we don’t accept paper-based applications, as part of our assessment includes an on-line numeracy test. All applications should therefore be made on-line. However, in exceptional circumstances, we can send you a paper form. Please contact the graduate team if this is the case at: graduate.enquiry@lloyds.com.

  • Can I apply if I need a work permit?

    Firstly you’ll need to have, or be expecting, at least a 2:2 (or equivalent) degree in any subject. Graduates requiring a visa to work in the UK are welcome to apply, but you will have to arrange the relevant visa yourself. All offers of employment will be subject to applicants providing relevant documents to confirm their identity, address and right to work in the UK.

  • Can I still apply if I don't meet the minimum requirements?

    Unfortunately, no. However, there are many other opportunities beyond the Lloyd’s graduate scheme: why not take a look at our current vacancies or the Lloyd’s Market Association’s graduate recruitment site.

  • Do you accept applications from mature students?

    Absolutely. We don’t discriminate on the basis of age, or on any other basis.

  • Do you do one year sandwich placements?

    Not within the Corporation, although there may be opportunities within certain managing agents in the Lloyd’s market. Please see the Lloyd’s Market Association’s graduate website for more details.

  • Do you have a preference for certain universities?

    Absolutely not. We’ll consider your applications regardless of which university you’ve attended.

  • How long will my interview take?

    The telephone interview should take no more than 30 minutes. If you are then invited to an assessment centre, this will take place over a half day period. We’ll send you more details should you be invited to the assessment centre.

  • How soon will it be before I have an interview?

    We aim to respond to applications within seven working days of receiving them. At this stage, you’ll be told whether or not you’ve been selected for a telephone interview and given a time and date when this will take place.

  • I graduated a while ago. Can I still apply?

    You certainly can. However, it might be worth considering whether this scheme is likely to meet your needs: bear in mind it is designed for those with little or no previous work experience.

  • I'm interested in a career in underwriting. Will I get the opportunity to take a placement in this?

    While the placements we offer are varied and will give you an excellent overview of both the market and Corporation, we can’t guarantee that we can offer you specific placements – though we’ll make every effort to accommodate your preferences. Equally, while there are placements available where you’ll be based in a managing agent in the market, the majority of placements on offer are within the Corporation. So, if you’re absolutely certain that a career in underwriting is for you, you may like to check out the graduate opportunities within the market at the Lloyd's Market Association.

  • Is it possible to defer joining the graduate programme for a year to travel?

    Unfortunately not. However, we have a sabbatical policy at Lloyd’s whereby - subject to approval - after three years’ service you can take up to 12 months unpaid leave.

  • Is there a minimum requirement for UCAS points?

    We review applications against a number of criteria, including UCAS points; however, we haven’t set a minimum requirement.

  • Once I join the graduate scheme, can I do further studies or get professional qualifications?

    During the scheme you will undertake the Diploma in Insurance, from the Chartered Insurance Institute: an industry-recognised qualification which will help you in your development, regardless of the area you end up in after the 24-month graduate programme.

  • What are the requirements for the graduate programme?

    You’ll need to be expecting – or have already received – a 2:2 grade in any subject. You’ll also need the right to work in the UK.

  • What happens after the generalist graduate programme

    Once you’ve successfully completed the scheme you’ll be able to explore options to move into a role within either the Corporation or the market. We’ll certainly expect you to continue to develop at a similar pace – although the onus is on you to own and manage your career, and of course, to show us what you can do.   • What provisions do you make for candidates with disabilities?

    We judge applicants purely on their ability – nothing else – and we work hard to help those with disabilities as much as possible. There’s a section on the application form where you can tell us if you need special help at any stage of the recruitment process, and give us details of any disability, so we can endeavour to meet any needs you may have.

    Lloyd's will ensure that all reasonable adjustments will be made to the assessment process to ensure that candidates with any form of disability are not disadvantaged in any way.   • What support will I get during the graduate programme

    In a word, lots. All graduates can benefit from:

    1. A 'buddy': they'll be there to help you make the transition into the world of work and answer any general questions you might have.
    2. A mentor: he or she will provide more formalised support to you during the scheme. Your mentor will monitor your performance over the 18-month period, and provide you with coaching and advice to make the most of your placements and help you make choices about your future career.

  • What type of people are you looking for?

    In a word, you need to be exceptional. But that doesn’t mean you need to have attended a particular university or studied a particular degree subject (though we do ask you have at least a 2:2).   • What's involved in the aptitude tests?

    We’ll be testing for numeracy skills in the online tests. If you’d like to have a go at a similar test before you take the real one, visit the SHL website.

  • What's involved in the first interview?

    Your interviewer will go through what's involved before the interview starts. The first interview will be based onthese recruitment competencies. We may also ask you about some of your responses to the online application form and ask you to elaborate on your answers a little more. You’ll also be asked a few more questions to help us assess the other qualities we’re looking for.

     

  • When can I expect to receive an offer?

    Assessment centres are scheduled to take place between December and March. Offers will then be made about five working days after each assessment centre. We recruit as we go, so we’d recommend that you get your application in early to avoid disappointment.

  • Will I have the opportunity to move around and take secondments - or work abroad?

    Over the course of the graduate scheme you’ll undertake a series of placements in various areas within Lloyd’s, across both the Corporation and the market. However, while Lloyd’s is a global organisation, your placements on the graduate scheme are likely to be UK-based. Some of our placements may bring you into direct contact with our international offices.

    For example, in International Regulatory Access you could be liaising with our international representatives and advising the market on how to conduct business in a particular territory. Alternatively, in International Markets and Business Development, you could be writing or presenting a report on the insurance industry in an emerging market.

  • Will I have the opportunity to work in different areas during the graduate programme?

    Absolutely. Our scheme is designed specifically to give you an insight into many different parts of Lloyd’s – across both the Corporation and the market. You’ll do this through a series of placements.

  • Will Lloyd's reimburse travel expenses?

    Yes – however expenses will be made in line with standard rail (no taxi’s) but make sure you keep the receipts as we’ll need them to process any expenses. We will reimburse overseas travel expenses, up to a maximum of £200.

  • Will there be opportunities for overseas travel during my career?

    Yes. After the graduate scheme you could find a position within one of our overseas offices, or be based in the UK but required to travel. However, during the graduate scheme it’s likely that you’ll be based in London.

  • Will you be attending any career events or fairs?

    Yes. We attend a number of campus careers fairs at UK universities every autumn, so that potential applicants can meet some of our people and get to know more about working for Lloyd's.
