Introducing Hayley Spink

Hayley is Head of Global Operations at Lloyd’s. She has been with the Corporation for 12 years, working her way through the business and seeing the change firsthand.

There are always different things happening, people wanting to look at things in different ways and you have to respond to that quite quickly. There’s always a new challenge on the horizon.

What has your journey with Lloyd’s been like?

I joined Lloyd’s 12 years ago, initially working in the IT team. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have a variety of roles across the business - working anywhere from Singapore to Brussels. I’ve been supported to progress throughout my journey, returning from maternity leave into a new global position and then taking on the role of Programme Director for the Brexit programme at Lloyd’s. I’ve now taken on a new challenge as Head of Global Operations for Lloyd’s - a great mix of everything I’ve done in the past. It’s global operations, it’s UK operations and it’s dealing with the market from both a front-facing and internally-facing perspective. It’s been an exciting journey.

What motivates and inspires you in your work?

We are seen as the best in the world when it comes to insurance and that’s truly inspiring when you are out there talking about Lloyd’s. We have a reputation for being innovative in what we do and it’s great to be at the forefront of fantastic new ideas that are coming out across the world. There are always different things happening, new challenges arising and people wanting to look at things in different ways. As a member of the Corporation, you have to respond to that quickly. Because we’re a marketplace, we deal with hundreds of different firms, brokers, managing agents and underwriters, all writing different products in different territories, so no one day is the same. There’s always a new challenge on the horizon.

How has Lloyd’s changed in your time here?

You’ve only got to look across the building now to see the diversity of people and the opportunities that have opened up across the Corporation. There’s a real understanding of why it’s so important that to have a diverse mix of people working in a business - particularly when you’re such a global business like us. We write business across the world in over 200 territories, so we have to understand how those territories work. Equally, technology has moved on at pace since I started 12 years ago. A lot of the technological advances available for people in their day-to-day lives has started to filter into how we work as a business. It’s a really exciting time to be part of the Lloyd’s Corporation and market, for so many reasons.

What do you think the future looks like for Lloyd’s?

We have a fantastic programme starting now called the ‘Future at Lloyd’s’ which has been a huge consultation exercise with our clients, our market and people outside the market - looking for what the future of Lloyd’s is and how that needs to look. Lloyd’s really is seen at the forefront of the insurance industry and we are the leaders in so many different ways. We have a responsibility to make sure the insurance industry as a whole is fit for purpose as we move into the future.
