Meaningful mentoring that supports new talent

29 Apr 2019

Hear from Raj and Tasmeen about their experiences of the IntoWork Mentoring programme

Last year’s IntoWork mentoring saw 28 mentors from the Lloyd’s market paired with talented young people ready to enter the world of work through our community initiatives.

Delivered in partnership with The Brokerage, a social mobility charity connecting young Londoners and employers, the IntoWork Mentoring initiative is funded by Lloyd’s Community Programme.

The aim of the initiative is to develop the professional skills of school leavers, undergraduates and graduates from London boroughs, and increase their aspirations ready for the world of work. This is achieved through a series of structured mentoring meetings, which include how to plan for the future, communicate in business, strengthen your brand and develop presentation skills.

As an apprentice in my first job, I did not know how to approach my goals. I thought that I wanted to work in finance but I did not know what steps I should take to make this happen. I joined the mentoring programme for guidance through this journey. It really helped me find out more about work opportunities, but it has also inspired me to learn more about insurance through the business presentation challenge.

Whereas in the past, I would never have thought of applying for any opportunities within insurance, I am now actively looking for roles within the insurance market. The mentoring sessions have helped me immensely by providing me with the guidance I needed. My mentor has helped me come up with a plan to help me meet my targets so that my goals now seem achievable. I can now confidently send my CV out to employers, attend interviews and networking events, which I was reluctant to do before. My future plans are to finish my apprenticeship programme and find the right opportunity for me, perhaps in insurance?

Mentee, Tasmeen Peerbux
Raj Garcha works at Talbot Underwriting as a System Accountant and has mentored Tasmeen over the summer. He said:

When I look back at leaving university, one the biggest things I lacked was the contacts and experience I needed within the insurance industry. I wanted to share advice on how to pursue a career in insurance to someone in the position I was once in. Knowing that there are some extremely talented young people that would be great assets for both the current and the future of our industry, I feel it’s our responsibility to harness this talent and enable these young people to thrive within our industry.

My career aspirations are to be within a managerial position within the next few years, and that means managing a team, and enabling them to flourish and achieve their goals, including many driven young professionals. This programme has allowed me to work with such individuals and confirms my belief that this what I want to do moving forward in my career.

If you are thinking about being a mentor, just do it, it’s so rewarding! The fulfilment gained from seeing your mentee develop professionally and personally within such a short space of time gives you immense pride. I will continue to mentor Tasmeen and help her make the most of her talents long after the programme ends.
