What is happening across the community?
An amazing impact!
Every year over 1,500 Lloyd’s Community Programme volunteers support almost 3,000 local people including many young people through reading partners, number partners and mentoring programmes. Your support has helped local students make their way up the national league table for academic results in recent years and 2013 was no exception. In fact while the picture of GCSE exam results across most of the country was one of decline, due to the tightning of grade boundries, students in Tower Hamlets managed to buck the trend.
In 2012, 61.5 per cent of Tower Hamlets students achieved the Government standard of five “good” GCSEs – those at grade C or above - including English and maths. In figures based on the results announced this past August, the figure rose to 65.3 per cent – an increase of 3.8 percentage points. This is the highest proportion since the measure was introduced in 2006.
Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership's Director, Helen Sanson, tells us, "In 2012, for the first time, Tower Hamlets pupils scored above the national average for students gaining 5 A* to C GCSE passes including Maths and English with 61.5% of pupils in Tower Hamlets achieving this benchmark compared to 59% nationally. This is testament to the schools and students’ hard work but also to the commitment and energy of volunteers from Lloyd’s market who make a huge difference in raising confidence, aspirations and providing that all important motivation to succeed".
This is an amazing result - thank you!
Don't just take our word for it
But it's not just Lloyd's and Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership that think your efforts are outstanding. The Lord Mayor's Dragon Award was awarded to Lloyd's Community Programme in recognition of the collective long-term (25 years!) commitment that you, Lloyd's market volunteers, have given in support of our neighbouring community in Tower Hamlets.
Thank you to our brilliant volunteers and coordinators for supporting Tower Hamlets! This success wouldn’t be possible without you.
