Lloyd's graduate blog

Working at Lloyd's is not what you'd class as an ordinary experience. World events, market conditions, and even the weather can influence and change what we do. We've set up these blogs to give you an insight into what life is really like working here. Each of our bloggers bring a unique perspective as they rotate through their six month placements.

The role of a loss adjuster

Graduate blog | Hector Witt | Friday 11 April 2014, 6:24PM

Whenever I used to hear the word ‘loss adjuster’ my first thoughts were always of floods, an unwillingness to pay and a rather negative press. A recent three week placement at the loss adjuster Crawford has led me to conclude that such aspersions are wholly untrue, and unfairly cloud a profession which provides vital support to people at a moment’s notice.

Things that happen to you after six months at Lloyd's

Graduate blog | Kayne Sheppard | Friday 21 March 2014, 1:56PM

A couple of weeks ago, the Lloyd's graduates celebrated their first six months in the Corporation. While we have all taken different placements, met different people and learned different things in the last half year, I like to think there are commonalities within our experiences, which have been ingrained within us all a little more than we may have realised. While they may not necessarily be the most technical of traits we’ll acquire in our insurance careers, here they are…

The skill of the broker

Graduate blog | Stuart Hollins | Thursday 16 January 2014, 4:53PM

Having emerged from my three week secondment at Clyde & Co enthused by the technical and potentially litigious nature of the insurance industry, I have moved on to my next placement – at broker Willis – keen to understand more about how coverage is negotiated and policies are placed.

On the other side...

Graduate blog | Devki Patel | Wednesday 08 January 2014, 8:47AM

I am still astounded at how different my life is in comparison to last year. Looking back I had quite a journey prior to joining Lloyd’s. After university I pursued a number of interests including financial news, law and travelling. Finally, I followed a path that led me to discover a career in insurance at Lloyd’s of London.

Lifting the lid on law and litigation in insurance

Graduate blog | Stuart Hollins | Friday 03 January 2014, 11:01AM

The nature of the insurance industry and the constant scope for dispute and disagreement in the event of a claim means the threat of legal proceedings is never far away. However, it is an aspect which is frequently overlooked – particularly by the average consumer.

Busy bees

Graduate blog | Gabija Radvilaite | Wednesday 11 December 2013, 2:11PM

It is that time of year again – the end of renewal season. Walking through the underwriting room you can’t help but notice the bigger than usual buzz as the 1 January fast approaches. While underwriters and brokers are busier than ever on the ground floor of the building, it is a quiet time for some of the other residents at Lloyd’s.
