Managing agents

Managing agents are companies specifically established to manage the underwriting of one or more syndicates. A managing agent is an authorised person that has been approved by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to carry on one or more FSA regulated activities.

Members' agents

Members' agents are companies specifically established to provide services and perform duties for members.  These services and duties include advising members on which syndicates they should participate and the level of participation on such syndicates and liaising with the members' managing agents. A members' agent is an authorised person and provide a link between individual members of Lloyd's and their syndicates.

Coverholders

Information on all Lloyd's approved and restricted coverholders. A coverholder is a firm that is authorised by a Lloyd's managing agent to enter into contracts of insurance and/or issue insurance documentation on the behalf of a syndicate it manages.

Open market correspondents

OMCs are firms that introduce business to one or more sponsoring Lloyd's broker for placement on an open market basis, ie business that may be offered to and placed with any managing agent that is willing to underwrite it on behalf of its managed syndicate.

Lloyd's Agents

The network comprises over 300 Lloyd's Agents and almost 340 Sub Agents in every major port and commercial centre in the world. Their primary purpose is to provide a range of surveying and adjusting services to the global insurance market and its customers.

The directory of Agents is searchable by location, port, country and company name. Each location has been allocated its own unique url and therefore may be saved to web favourites or direct to desktop for ease of use.

Brokers

Brokers act as an intermediary between clients and underwriters.  There are two types of broker involved in arranging insurance and reinsurance at Lloyd’s: insurance brokers and reinsurance brokers. Some brokers act both as insurance brokers and reinsurance brokers.

Lloyd's run-off brokers

Run-off brokers provide services for policyholders whose broker has gone into liquidation. The run-off broker will ensure that alterations and claims are handled to their natural completion. Run-off brokers have no authorisation to handle new business.
