Mr Brewer, 65, who worked for Sedgwick in a range of roles within the Lloyd’s, international markets and subsequently Marsh, became the latest in a line of Lord Mayors stretching back to 1189. Lloyd’s current chairman, Lord Levene, was Lord Mayor of London from 1998 – 1999.

Mr Brewer was officially elected as Lord Mayor on Friday at the Silent Ceremony in London’s Guildhall. His role will involve travelling across the world representing the City of London, and he has the status of a UK Government Cabinet minister whilst overseas.

His varied business interests include Asia, and he is Honorary Treasurer and Board Member of the China-Britain Business Council and also Vice-President of the Great Britain China Centre.

Greater links between the City and China will be one of his priorities over the coming year, and his election comes days after Chinese President Hu Jintao gave Lloyd’s the go-ahead to set up an on-shore reinsurance operation in China.
