Lloyd’s at the CII’s Big Event
9 November 2007
Lloyd’s attended the Chartered Insurance Institute’s (CII) first ever insurance specific careers event held the at the University of Manchester, to support its graduate programme, which will give graduates a stepping stone into the world of insurance.
Hundreds of students and graduates based in the greater Manchester area, and from further afield, turned up for ‘Know Risk: The Big Event’ last week. The aim of the event was to help the CII raise the number of graduates looking for a career in the insurance industry from 10% to 30% within the next five years and to change students’ perceptions of insurance.
In addition to the Lloyd’s stand, the other industry exhibitors at the event were Aon, Willis, Allianz, AXA, Norwich Union, Towergate, Groupama and Munich Re.
Chris Hooper, Head of HR at Lloyd’s, was pleased by the event, saying: “We had a strong calibre of students asking about the graduate programme and we are very much looking forward to them applying.”
Karren Brady, Managing Director of Birmingham City Football Club, provided the keynote speech at the event, whilst BBC One business presenter, Declan Curry, opened the proceedings with his humorous and well researched view on risk management, reinforcing to the assembled students that they ‘will not be entering a backwater industry’.
As well as these high profile speakers, the day included breakout information sessions, career insights from industry figures, and presentations on hot insurance topics such as climate change and terrorism/political risk.
Attendee Deepak Shahani, himself a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India, an ACII and now pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, commented: “As a student, what impressed me the most was the availability of a common platform, where both potential employers and potential employees came together to exchange their opinions and expectations of the industry.
“The event was an eye opener for me. To be exposed to crucial topics such as climate change, global warming, and advanced techniques like catastrophe modelling, was quite interesting.”
Nigel Ralph, Senior Property Underwriter from Ace Tempest Re Europe, gave an excellent account of the reinsurance sector in the career insight section and was pleased with the event.
“This was an impressive and well attended event. I feel that it is important the insurance industry reaches out – particularly outside London – and the presence today of so many students bodes well for the industry’s future,” he said.
