5. Reduce the environmental impact of our business

  • Encourage our suppliers to improve the sustainability of their products and services.
  • Measure and seek to reduce the environmental impact of the internal operations and physical assets under our control.
  • Disclose our direct emissions of greenhouse gases using a globally recognised standard.
  • Engage our employees on our commitment to address climate change, helping them to play their role in meeting this commitment in the workplace and encouraging them to make climate-informed choices outside work.

How is Lloyd’s taking action and reducing the environmental impact of our business?:

Whilst the distinctive Lloyd’s building in the City was ahead of its time in the late 1980s in including design features with energy efficiency specifically in mind, Lloyd’s is committed to maximising energy efficiency and cutting carbon emissions.  A number of initiatives have been introduced over recent years to improve energy efficiency, including improvements behind the scenes to the heating and chilling systems of the building.

There is an ongoing programme of communications with users of the building to promote best practice and a network of ‘Environmental Champions’ meets regularly to discuss ways to improve environmental performance and disseminate ideas and information back to their teams.  Following a recent energy audit of the Lloyd’s Building by the Carbon Trust, Lloyd’s is now aiming to cut energy use further and has set resource reduction targets, including improving further improvements to the efficiency of its heating systems.

Awareness raising events such as the recent ‘Change the World 9 to 5’ event in June 2007 was open to all users of the building and included opportunities to do a home energy audit with the Energy Savings Trust, as well as providing information on making climate-formed choices whilst at work.

Recently Fidentia House, Lloyd’s offices in Chatham, has received a ‘Very Good’ environmental rating from the Building Research Establishment.  This building includes features, such as occupancy sensitive lighting, heat recovery systems and localised heating systems with individual time and temperature controls.
