3. Support climate awareness amongst our customers

  • Inform our customers of climate risk and provide support and tools so that they can assess their own levels of risk.
  • Encourage our customers to adapt to climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through insurance products and services.
  • Increase the proportion of repairs that are carried out in a sustainable way through dialogue with suppliers and developers and manage waste material appropriately.
  • Consider how we can use our expertise to assist the developing world to understand and respond to climate change.

How is Lloyd’s taking action and supporting climate awareness amongst our customers?:

As the world’s leading specialist insurance market, Lloyd’s encourages and facilitates public debate on the key risk issues, and climate change is no exception. Through a series of campaigns and activities under the banner of Lloyd’s 360 Risk Project, Lloyd’s is engaging a cross section of society - from global business to primary school children - on this important issue.

In July 2006, Lloyd's hosted its first 360 Live Debate, which was attended by more than 200 executives from the worlds of insurance, business, government and science. The event, chaired by Sir Trevor McDonald, provided the platform to discuss key issues such as whether climate change is high enough on the political agenda and the need for longer-term strategies.

Recognising its responsibility in raising awareness not only in business but also the local community, Lloyd’s launched the ‘Trees in the City’ project in February, a creative collaboration which reinforces the message that we need to take action on climate change. As well as improving outside spaces in the City, this project also includes a series of poetry workshops on climate change for students in primary and secondary schools. Lloyd’s also gave the next generation – year 10 pupils from Tower Hamlets -  the opportunity to make their voices heard on climate change by hosting the finals of the Tower Hamlets Public Speaking Competition earlier this year.

These events all form part of Lloyd’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the problems of climate change and the need for everyone, from big business to school children, to take action. It is hoped that by stimulating debate across a whole spectrum of society Lloyd’s can play an important role in raising awareness of the issues, changing attitudes and helping create effective strategies to tackle climate change.
