Lighthill Risk Network launched in 2007

Share our research with scientists, society, business, governments and NGOs through an appropriate forum.

On 11 April 2007 the Lighthill Risk Network was launched in Lloyd's Old Library at a meeting attended by Lloyd's managing agents, brokers, academics and representatives from the UK Research Councils.

Along with Guy Carpenter, Benfield and Lloyd's managing agent Catlin, Lloyd's is a core member of the network which is open to all participants of the financial services industry.  Its aim is to facilitate and enhance knowledge transfer into insurance from academic, government and professional experts at the forefront of risk-related research.

On 25 May 2007  the network hosted a conference on the latest science concerning the risk of London Flooding. The conference was organised by Edmund Penning-Rowsell from Middlesex University and included speakers from various research organisations.  Subjects covered included: modelling of flooding, rainfall extremes, the Thames Barrier and other defences, and storm surges and climate change.

The network is not solely focussed on climate change and includes all aspects of risk management for the financial services industry.  For example it organised an event on the risks of Nanotechnology in December.  However it is planning a conference for the second quarter of 2008 on the European implications of climate change.  Climate change will, no doubt, continue to be a regular subject for the network.
