Following on from a successful Catastrophe Modelling forum event in 2007, Lloyd's worked with the III and Harvard by sponsoring the forum again in 2008 along with the AIG and other participating companies.
The forum discussed how best to include climate change risks in the catastrophe modelling process, and touched on a wide range of issues from atmospheric pressure to ocean temperatures to ice sheet reduction.
While there were many varying opinions, those assembled agreed that communicating the risks of climate change are essential and that until the public gains a greater understanding of the complex nature of the issue, it will be difficult to establish the political and social movement required to combat the risks. A summary of outcomes is available on the iii website.
Around 40 participants took part in the discussions including representatives from the major catastrophe modelling companies, insurers and brokers and leading climate science academics.
