Lloyd's takes part in Portuguese debate on climate change adaptation

Promote and actively engage in public debate on climate change and the need for action

 Lloyd's sent a representative to the National Initiative on Adaptation To Climate Change in Portugal in June 2008.  Supported by the Portuguese Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development (MAOTDR) and the British Embassy in Lisbon.  The event aimed to accelerate discussions on climate change in Portugal.

The event was attended by several hundred representatives from:

  • Central and Decentral Administration
  • Local Authorities
  • Financial Institutions (Banking and Insurance)
  • Business and Socio-Professional Associations (agriculture, tourism, forrestry and others)
  • Non Governmental Organisations (Environment, Development and Cooperation)
  • Research Institutions
  • Scientific Community


Speakers included the secretary of State for Environment, Humberto Rosa, the British Ambassador in Lisbon, Alexander Ellis and a representative from the United Kingdom Climate Impacts Program, Roger Street.

Trevor Maynard, manager of emerging risks at Lloyd's, spoke about the effects of climate change on the insurance industry. His talk suggested possible medium term impacts to property, liability and political risks policies and showcased the work of 360 Risk Insight at Lloyd's and ClimateWise.
