Lloyd's hosts floodfighers conference in the Old Library

Work effectively with emergency services and others in the event of a major climate related disaster.

On 9th May 2008 Lloyd's hosted "Floodfighters City Resilient" an event that brought businesses and emergency responders together to discuss flooding int he context of Sir Michael Pitt's review of the 2007 floods.  The conference was the latest in a series of such conferences but the first at Lloyd's.

The conference was opened by Paul Nunn, Head of Exposure Management at Lloyd's.  Nunn comments: "Insurance can be considered as disaster relief that is funded in advance. We believe that, due to climate change, risks are changing around the world.  As part of our commitment under the climatewise principles to work with the emergency services we were delighted to host the conference."

Chief Fire Officer Paul Hayden chaired the event during the morning. Hayden has a number of national responsibilities which includes chairing the CFOA Inland Water Strategy Group responsible for flood response strategy. The afternoon was chaired by Emily Landis Walker who sits on the Private Sector Senior Advisory Committee.

Among the speakers were:

  • Colin Berghouse, the UK's Flood Emergencies Capabilities Programme Workstream Manager, who spoke on business preparedness and critical national infrastructure.
  • Jeremy Azis of the EU FloodCommand project who spoke about catastrophic flooding and lessons learned from an EU sponsored flooding scenario.
  • Simon Lewis, Chief Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police who spoke about emergency preparedness in London

Other speakers spoke about Evacuation issues, on-line scenario exercises, how to manage a crisis and how the new British Standards (BS25999) will make an impact.
