How is Lloyd’s taking action and reducing the environmental impact of our business?
- Lloyd’s Environmental Working Group meets regularly to develop and monitor progress against an environmental action plan for the Corporation of Lloyd’s. This group is composed of representatives from Finance, Operations, Property Services, IT, Catering, Supplier Management and Community Affairs.
The primary objective for the group is to measure and seek to reduce the environmental impact of the internal operations and physical assets under our control. The Environmental Action Plan focuses on energy consumption and also covers issues such as waste, transport and procurement.
- Lloyd’s purchases renewable electricity for the Lloyd’s Building in London and Fidentia House in Kent – our two main offices. Initiatives are also being implemented to help reduce our energy consumption at these locations.
- A new print management system was introduced last year at these offices which was significantly more energy efficient than the previous system – using up to 99% less energy when the devices are on standby.
- An upgrade programme for heating and chilling equipment in the Lloyd’s Building is also underway, which will result in a more energy efficient building.
- Video-conferencing technology has now been introduced in our offices in the UK and our international offices to help reduce air travel miles where possible.
- With the help of external consultants, Scott Wilson, we undertake to calculate and disclose the greenhouse gas emissions from our UK operations. The emissions for 2008 were calculated at 14,349 tonnes of which 13,580 tonnes was from building energy consumption and 769 tonnes was travel related.
- Each year, Lloyd’s runs a ‘Green Award’ – an opportunity for employees to put forward their environmental improvement ideas – and Lloyd’s commits to implement the winning idea.
