Supporting sporting dreams

The Lloyd’s market has certainly played its part. In the run up to the Beijing Games four years ago, Lloyd’s insurer Sportscover was thrilled when one of the athletes it sponsored, hockey player Sarah Thomas, was picked for the GB Squad. Sarah is now a double Olympian having been picked again for the 2012 squad.

Lloyd’s insurer Beazley has recently found out that virtue can be its own reward. It was shortlisted for the prestigious Hollis Sponsorship Awards in the Sports Sponsorship (under £750k) category for its support of British Fencing. The countdown clock on Beazley’s website has been steadily ticking away the days before the Olympic Fencing begins.

Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund is also particularly pleased that one of the charities it sponsors will have such a strong showing at the London Games. The British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association (BLESMA) supports former military personnel through physical rehabilitation, residential care, financial grants and welfare advice.

Seven of their ex-servicemen are taking part in events including rowing, volleyball, sailing and cycling at the Paralympics. We wish them the best of luck.

Lloyd’s own staff too, have been keen to help their hometown Games. Eric Linin who works in Lloyd’s Human Resources Department, will be undertaking 11-hour long shifts as a volunteer marshal. But the hours don’t faze him one bit,

“To be involved in the greatest show on earth, in my home town is amazing. I’ll be able to say that I was there.”

Lloyd’s has long provided cover for sporting events across the globe. However, these events would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the men and women striving for sporting glory.
