Lloyd's has today announced a £200,000 donation to BLESMA, the limbless veterans charity.
The money donated by Lloyd's Patriotic Fund, made possible by the support of the Lloyd's market, will fund the charity's 2012 programme of rehabilitation for seriously injured soldiers which includes sporting activities ranging from sky diving to angling, golf and white-water rafting.
Tania Munro, BLESMA's Fundraising Manager, said: "BLESMA are excited and very grateful for this generous donation. Rehabilitation activities mean so much to our members as they help injured servicemen and women regain their confidence, acquire new skills and enjoy the company of other amputees."
She added: "Thank you to everyone at Lloyd's Patriotic Fund for your kind support and we look forward to an eventful year together."
BLESMA supports all service men and women who lose limbs, the use of limbs or eyes or the sight of an eye while serving in the armed forces and, starting with rehabilitation, remain a support for the rest of their lives.
The charity is currently seeking volunteers from the Lloyd’s market to help BLESMA members with their rehabilitation by joining them in a series of sporting activities over the next 12 months.
Opportunities for volunteers include Adaptive Skiing in Austria in February, where they will assist the BLESMA members on the slopes and learn how to ski bike.
Following this in May is the Angling Championships in Leicestershire, where volunteers can fish with the group and support the BLESMA members when needed.
In June, volunteers can be part of the BLESMA group for the 3 Counties Cycle Ride and in August, support the members with white-water rafting and climbing in Colorado.
