Defying a washout three months, Lloyd’s Community Programme (LCP) pulled off a summer barbeque recently with its Back to School BBQ for around 100 volunteers from the market and community partners.
Strictly for adults, the barbeque featured punch, hot dogs and a ‘tuck shop’ full of sweets – not the average school night supper.
Retro theme
A Hackney jazz quartet provided a swinging soundtrack and the winners of the school quiz – no cheating allowed – were awarded extra bags of retro sweets. Nick Furlongue, Chairman of LCP, gave his thanks to the 1,460 market participants who gave their time to the Programme last year.
Annalie James, the recipient of the first ever Lloyd’s Community Programme University bursary, received a particularly warm reception when she spoke about the difference the bursary would make to her.
Community commitment
The barbeque was an appropriate end to a week which also saw the LCP team attend the annual Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards where they’d been shortlisted for the Lord Mayor’s Award – in recognition of the market’s long term commitment to community engagement.
For more than 20 years Lloyd’s Community Programme has been using the skills and resources of the Lloyd’s market to improve the lives of those living in its neighbouring East London boroughs.
Last night was an opportunity to thank everyone in the market for helping to make such a difference to so many lives during the year.
