Summer of Sport

Summer Neighbourhood Games volunteer

Hundreds of children and over 70 Lloyd’s Community Programme volunteers took part in the Summer Neighbourhood Games on Wednesday 22 August continuing a fantastic summer of sport in East London.

Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation, through their Stepping Stones Programme, train local young people aged 16 -19 to set up and run after school clubs for primary school children in their local communities.

The annual Summer Neighbourhood Games provides an opportunity for all of the after school clubs to come together and take part in competitive tournaments and try out new sports.

The Games at Mile End Park Stadium saw the children take part in events including Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Football and Tag-Rugby, and introduced the children to new sports including Archery, Fencing, Golf and Judo.

Chris Willets from Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation said, “This has been a particularly important year for the Summer Neighbourhood Games as we look to build on the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympics and once again our partnership with Lloyd's Community Programme has provided a fantastic sports event for young people in Tower Hamlets.

To break years of low participation and declining standards of health in Tower Hamlets it is essential we convince children that sport and physical activity is for them, and Lloyd's investment and the wonderful attitudes of their volunteers plays a key role in achieving that.”

Many of the volunteers from across the Lloyd’s market enjoyed the day just as much as the children. Natalie Tickle, Community Affairs Executive at Lloyd’s, said: “The Lloyd’s market is full of sports enthusiasts and the Neighbourhood Games provides a great opportunity for our volunteers to support sporting activity in our neighbouring borough. Today our volunteers have left their desks behind to referee, umpire and coach a number of sports.”

Lloyd’s Community Programme will be providing further support for Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation this September when it holds a sports quiz night at Lloyd’s to raise further funds for the charity.  To find out more, please contact natalie.tickle@lloyds.com.
