Lloyd's in Switzerland

Following a resolution of 31 October 1947 of the Swiss Federal Council, Lloyd’s underwriters were granted authorisation to commence operations in Switzerland from 1 January 1948. Lloyd’s celebrated its 60th anniversary in Switzerland with a gala lunch on 15 October 2008.

In those sixty years, Lloyd’s has established a reputation as an important provider of specialist insurance products to individuals and corporate clients. Those products include property coverage to protect high value assets, marine, aviation and transport, political risks, directors and officers’ (D&O) liability and contingency coverages.

Lloyd’s works closely in Switzerland with a distribution network of, currently, 63 “Lloyd’s Swiss brokers”. This enables Lloyd’s underwriters to adapt products to individual needs and generally act with great flexibility. The Lloyd’s Swiss brokers are subject to the supervision of the Swiss Federal Office of Private Insurance (“FOPI”), the Swiss insurance supervisory authority, as are those Lloyd’s U.K. brokers also so registered.

The Swiss market is a consistent source of business for Lloyd’s, which reported gross direct insurance premiums of CHF 144 million for 2007. In addition, Swiss insurers and reinsurers are an important source of inwards reinsurance business to the Lloyd’s market.

The Lloyd’s branch office for Switzerland is also supervised, for the totality of underwriters’ Swiss business, by the FOPI. This fact and the adhesion to Swiss business conduct rules provide additional security to all Lloyd’s Swiss insureds.
The Lloyd's branch office for Switzerland is domiciled in Zurich under the following address.
