Special provisions in the Japan Insurance Business Law allow Lloyd’s members to underwrite non-life business in Japan through a single general agent (coverholder), Lloyd’s Japan Inc.

The Japanese market is the ninth largest source of revenue for Lloyd’s globally and the premiums generated by Japan policyholders in 2008amounted to approximately GBP289 million (2007 GBP 231 million), 90% of which is reinsurance and 10% is direct insurance.

Lloyd’s Japan Inc. is active in property, casualty, liability and marine classes. In addition, a range of specialist covers is offered, including but not limited to specie, terrorism, kidnap & ransom and contingency.
