Keith Stern
Keith Stern, Lloyd's General Representative for Australia.

Keith has worked for Lloyd’s for 18 years and was appointed as Lloyd’s Underwriters’ General Representative for Australia in January 2000, operating from Lloyd’s Australia Ltd office in Sydney. He is also Director and General Manager of Lloyd’s Australia Ltd.

Previously, as Regional Manager within the Business Development Unit, he had specific responsibility for Africa, Australasia and the Middle East during which time he successfully worked on new trading arrangements for Australia and South Africa. In addition to his current role in Australia, Keith has helped to maintain the Lloyd’s licence and relationships with regulators and coverholders in New Zealand, Israel, the Lebanon, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Papua New Guinea.

Lloyd's Australia Ltd is the representative office of Lloyd's of London and is located in Sydney. The Lloyd's General Representative is Keith Stern.

The overall purpose of the Lloyd's Australia office is to:

  • Play a role in managing, protecting and enhancing Lloyd's licences and trading rights.
  • Represent Lloyd's and Lloyd's underwriters in Australia in order to comply with Australian laws and regulations concerning insurers underwriting business from Australia.
  • Ensure that all regulatory or fiscal reporting requirements are carried out.
  • Ensure Lloyd's interests are both protected and promoted. Reporting and advising on any matters which may impact on Lloyd's business to Lloyd's and, as appropriate, Lloyd's underwriters.


The major responsibilities and accountabilities of the Lloyd's Australia office are to ensure that:

  • There is compliance with all local legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Taxes and contributions that may fall due to Lloyd's and underwriters are paid in line with local deadlines.
  • Writs are received on behalf of Lloyd's underwriters and remedial action taken as appropriate.
  • Complaints are handled efficiently passing on information to Lloyd's as appropriate and handling any possible local ombudsman procedures.
  • Advice as to local coverholder/broker applications to Lloyd's centrally is provided.
  • Coverholder activities are monitored, taking action if necessary to ensure effective control and that run-off arrangements are handled properly.
  • Effective working relations are maintained with the regulatory body in the territory concerned.
  • Relationships with the local market and those in the Lloyd's market carrying out business in the territory concerned are fully effective. Providing advice and assistance as appropriate.
  • Enquiries on behalf of Lloyd's are dealt with, directing them as required.
  • Reports to Lloyd's are provided as required; ensuring that information provided to Lloyd's is kept up-to-date and accurate.
  • Assistance is provided in any Lloyd's promotional activity - that information as to local market developments and any possible business opportunities are communicated.
  • Assistance is provided to Lloyd's in developing and implementing any agreed business development strategy.
  • Trust fund monitoring and policy wording activities are carried out efficiently and effectively.
  • Agreed business development objectives are progressed.
  • That there is effective management of the office and its staff.
