Lloyd's in Italy

Lloyd’s has been participating in reinsurance activity for many years in Italy and was authorised to undertake direct business in 1986.

In accordance with the third EU insurance directive, the underwriters work on the same basis as a license granted to Lloyd’s in the UK. Products are distributed using a network of authorised Lloyd’s correspondents.

The Lloyd’s Italian representative office is based in Milan. Its main functions consist of supporting local business, promoting the growth of Lloyd’s activities in Italy, assuring compliance with regulations, developing and maintaining business relationships with local authorities, associations and media and, in general, acting as a source of information.

Italy is one of the main sources of business for Lloyd’s in Europe. The turnover generated by Italy in 2008 amounted to over 500 million euros, divided between direct insurance and reinsurance.

Email: enrico.bertagna@lloyds.com

Enrico Bertagna was born in Brescia (Italy) in 1966 and began his professional training in architecture. He later moved on to the insurance field and, while earning valuable on-the-job experience, he pursued an MBA and attended several other management training programmes both in Italy and the UK.

Enrico began his insurance career as a business consultant in a plurimandatory insurance agency which he left in 1987, when he was appointed Area Manager of the INA Assitalia group. After which, he spent a period in London working for the Lloyd’s broker Richards, Longstaff Insurance Ltd as its consultant on Italy related matters.

He joined the Lloyd’s Italian Office in 1990 where he dealt with underwriting issues and developed commercial relationships with Lloyd’s business partners. He was later promoted Senior Manager, Operations & Development in 1998. During this period he was appointed Insurance Advisor by the Rome Court and joined the board of directors of Saturno, an agricultural risks consortium.

In 1999 he became the Lloyd’s General Representative for Italy. In this position he re-structured the Lloyd’s operating platform in Italy by adopting a User Pays scheme and led the development of Mocha, a web-based IT system for the processing of Binding Authority business. Since Enrico took over this role, Italy has become one of the fastest growing markets for Lloyd’s in Europe and the largest source of direct business in the region.

In 2002, in addition to being the Country Manager for Italy, he was appointed to the position of Senior Manager, European Development. As such, Enrico became responsible for co-ordinating all business development activities of the Lloyd’s European offices, exploring potential new markets and for managing the strategic relationships with BIPAR and FERMA.

Enrico worked as a member of the Lloyd’s Environment Brand Implication Group and as a member of the Lloyd’s Binder Development Group.

In 2007, as a consequence of Lloyd’s adopting a regional structure, Enrico was promoted to Regional Manager, Europe. He is now responsible for the operations of Lloyd’s offices in Europe while retaining his position of Country Manager for Italy.

Enrico is a member of the Lloyd’s Management Team, President of Lloyd’s France SAS, board member of Lloyd’s Ireland and Lloyd’s Polska. He is also Chairman of UGARI, the Italian Association of Young Insurers and Reinsurers.
