Time: One to two hours each month or one-off workshops

Where: One-Day Employablity Workshops take place in schools around Tower Hamlets.  Student Mentoring takes place in your office. 

Even with qualifications under their belts, young people often find it difficult to get their first break into a job. This is certainly true in Tower Hamlets which have the highest levels of youth unemployment in the UK.

Lloyd's Community Programme volunteers step in at critical points in the lives of local students to offer advice and help them improve the softer skills that we know employers are looking for. 

What's involved?

You have a choice about which volunteering role would suit you best.  Essentially, it comes down to time and location.

• Student Mentoring

  For a regular commitment, involving one to two hours each month, you can sign up to mentor a 15-18 year old student who will come to your office (after an initial meeting at their school). 

  This is a great opportunity to encourage young people from Tower Hamlets to venture into the world of the City and adopt some of the employability skills that we might take for granted, like arranging a meeting time and date, finding the office location and turning up on time!  

  This type of mentoring sees you regularly meeting up and working on anything from CVs to interview practice.  A mentor pack is provided with lots of hints and tips, and of course, the CSR team are always available to advise where possible.

  The commitment is for one academic year (October to May) and meetings will take place twice every half term at a mutually convenient time and location. If you would like to find out more contact Hannah on hannah.payson@lloyds.com or call 020 7327 5484.

  If you can't commit to that time frame, then One-Day Employability workshops are a good alternative.  One-Day workshops are held in schools around Tower Hamlets, and focus on jobs and successful first interviews. 

• One-Day Employability Workshops

  One-Day Employability Workshops are run in schools in Tower Hamlets and aim to prepare students for the world of work.  Lloyd's Community Programme supports two progammes, Getting Ahead and Head to Head which are summarised below.

  Getting Ahead

  GETTING AHEAD is a programme of employability skills based conferences for young people in secondary schools in Tower Hamlets.  Volunteers work with small groups of young people through several workshops across a day long conference. 

  Each workshop covers a certain area of the world of work such as first impressions, employer expectations, problem solving, communication skills, presentation skills, putting together a good CV or application form, interview skills and team work.  For more detailed information on Getting Ahead, please download Getting Ahead. 

  Head to Head

  Head to Head is a practice interview programme to give students a real interview experience based on their CV in order to help them apply for employment or hidhger education. 

  Volunteer time is very flexible and can be as little as a half day session, although its also possible to volunteer for the full day.  For more detailed information on Head to Head, please download Head to Head.
