Ida Emerges Over NW Caribbean, May Regain Tropical Storm Strength-NHC

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Tropical Depression Ida re-emerged over water in the northwest Caribbean off Nicaragua and Honduras Friday, and is expected to regain tropical storm strength Saturday, reports the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The NHC says the storm could approach Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula late Sunday. The NHC urged Cuba to monitor the storm as well.

At 4 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), the depression was centered about 110 kilometers northwest of Cabo Gracia a Dios on Nicaragua-Honduras border. It was moving north at about 12 kilometers an hour. Strongest winds were about 56 kilometers an hour.

The NHC says Ida could dump as much as two inches of rain on northeastern Honduras, posing a threat of mudslides.
