Shortly after the quake, the huge task of clearing land and rebuilding the city began. Building codes were finally strengthened and dangerous land was swiftly reoccupied once the wreckage was cleared.
The great burst of rebuilding gave San Francisco its current character, as much of the housing is of the same vintage and style.
The city regained its vigour and kept its position as principal city of the West. The populace returned, many after living for years in large refugee camps.
The city rose from the ashes after the disaster. After being almost completely destroyed, San Francisco was back in business in three years, largely rebuilt in less than ten.
