Time out for volunteering

17 July 2008

New volunteers from the Lloyd’s market showed their enthusiasm for Lloyd’s Community Programme by signing up for the volunteer fair held at Lloyd’s on Thursday 17 July 2008.

Rachel Haldane, from Hiscox had previously been involved in the award-winning Lloyd's Community Programme as a Reading Partner.  Rachel visited the fair to find out how she could become involved again and said: “It looks like there are loads of interesting opportunities going on and I will certainly be signing up for a programme.  It is great that the LCP organises so many volunteering opportunities.”

Lloyd's Community Programme is one of the longest running community involvement schemes in the Square Mile.  The programme provides volunteering opportunities for individuals and companies from the Lloyd’s market to give their time and share skills in an effort to improve the opportunities and environment in neighbouring East London.

Volunteer opportunities include working with primary school children on their numeracy and literacy skills with the Words & Numbers project, sports volunteering or developing pupils' employability skills through the Ready to Work programme.  Helping Hands is another popular option, with community projects ranging from decorating a classroom to renovating an East London park.

Stephen Lawrence from AON was interested in sports volunteering for the cricket tournament organised by LCP at the Brit Oval.  “I was disappointed that I missed out on the cricket tournament this year.  But the volunteer fair is a great way to follow up on my interest in LCP and register for volunteering for next year’s cricket tournament.”

The fair was supported by LCP’s partner Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THBP).  Mike Tyler, THEBP Director commented, ”The fair is an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of Lloyd's Community Programme across the Lloyd’s market, giving people an opportunity to learn more about the wide range of opportunities available.  It reinforces Lloyd’s staunch and long term support to education in the neighbouring borough of Tower Hamlets.”
