Atherstone-on-Stour Firefighters’ Appeal

13 December 2007

The fire at a warehouse in Atherstone, Warwickshire, last month was the worst loss of life for the fire brigade in a single incident since 1973 and resulted in the death of four firefighters.

An appeal has been set up by the local community to provide for the dependants and families of the four firefighters, three of whom were part-time and has been endorsed by Lloyd’s Chairman, Lord Levene.

"I am delighted to offer my full support to the Atherstone Firefighters Appeal following the terrible fire that so tragically claimed four lives,” said Lord Levene.

“The insurance industry has a long tradition of donation in the aftermath of events like this and I urge all of us involved in the industry to assist with providing for the families of those who have died whilst attempting to save lives and preserve the property that the industry insures.”

The monies raised from the appeal will provide for the families and dependents of those killed or injured in the incident and has attracted high profile support.

Lord Hunt of Wirral, President of the Chartered Insurance Institute, added: “These outstandingly courageous men went far beyond the call of duty and made the ultimate sacrifice. Now we must not fail in our duty to those whom they have left behind. I hope there will be a massive response to this appeal.”

Lloyd’s Charities Trust has pledged its support to the Atherstone-on-Stour Firefighters’ Appeal with a donation.
