Set up in 1989, Lloyd’s Community Programme is one of the longest running community involvement schemes in the City of London. The programme provides volunteering opportunities for individuals and companies from the Lloyd’s insurance market to give their time and share skills in an effort to improve the opportunities and environment in neighbouring East London.
The programme is supported by individuals from over 65 underwriting agencies, insurance brokers and other associated companies who form part of Lloyd’s insurance market. The agencies, brokers and associated companies pay an annual membership donation which is used to fund the Lloyd’s Community Programme’s projects. The unique collaborative nature of the programme has encouraged a sense of community – both within the market itself as well as with neighbouring boroughs.
Despite bordering on the City and being home to Canary Wharf, East London is characterised by having some of the country’s highest social deprivation statistics. Since Lloyd’s Community Programme was established, it has worked to address some of the main socio-economic challenges in the area including educational achievement and opportunities, employment and regeneration.
